how the alerts are generated

Every 30 seconds, our server downloads a new image from the Doppler Radar site operated by the National Weather Service in Huntsville, Alabama (an example of the image is directly below). A scan zone, essentially a circle, with Whitwell at its center and a radius of 5 miles, is automatically examined by our software. If weather conditions exceed a "moderate precipitation" (VIP:8/40dbz) amount anywhere within the scan zone, an alert is automatically issued. Additional alerts, if needed will be generated every 20 minutes if the weather conditions continue to exceed the pre-set limit. There are no false alerts! If the software detects weather conditions equal or exceeding the pre-set limit, an alert is issued.

how doppler radar works

Doppler radar works by detecting the presence of precipitation and its relative velocity. Depending on the amount of precipitation within the scanned area, a signal value can be assigned to illustrate the severity of the precipatation or velocity. The "louder" the radar return is, the heavier the precipitation. Our alerts are set to trigger at a 40 dbZ signal, also known as a VIP (Volumn Intercepted Precipatation) 8 on a scale that runs from 0 to 15 for our system. A 40 dbZ/VIP:8 level is defined as being .50"/hr - Moderate to Heavy Rain. When we detect these conditions within our scanning zone, an alert is automatically issued.

what the alerts contain

When you receive an alert, it will contain an image attachment of the current Doppler Weather Radar map customized for our area and showing the current conditions so you can see what has triggered the alert. Alert messages will be sent every 20 minutes thereafter as long as the alert condition exists. To see an actual example of an alert email, click HERE.

You may send questions or comments regarding this service to rick@rickrobey.com. There is no charge for this service and we will never share your email address with anyone else.

We highly recommend heeding these alerts. You may need to take additional action to protect lives and property!
